When Headaches Seem to Come Out of Nowhere

//When Headaches Seem to Come Out of Nowhere

Headaches, secondary headaches and migrainesHeadaches always have a reason. There is something that is making them happen. Sometimes headaches that suddenly appear are actually secondary headaches. This means that they are the end result of an injury or other health problem. The only way to get rid of them is to find out what is causing them in the first place. Taking a pill may help to alleviate them temporarily, but chances are they will happen again and again until the root cause is addressed.

What might some of these underlying causes be?

  • Structural damage at the base of the skull called Chiari malformation
  • Problems with the teeth
  • Acute sinus problems
  • Certain kinds of medications
  • Being dehydrated
  • Infection of the middle ear
  • Whiplash
  • Concussion
  • PCS (Post-concussion syndrome)
  • Nerve damage in the face and brain called trigeminal neuralgia
  • Rebound (medication overuse) headaches
  • Panic or anxiety attacks

How Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Can Help the Root Cause of Headaches

At Upper Cervical Health Center of Springfield, we examine our patients to find out if there is a misalignment of the C1 or C2 vertebra. This is often one of the most common reasons for headaches that we see in our practice. A misalignment of only ¼ of a millimeter in the top bones of the neck can cause a number of health-related problems throughout the body. This is due to the fact that the brainstem lies in this area of the body. A misalignment places undue pressure on the brainstem causing the brain and body not to communicate properly. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow are hindered. This creates the right environment for headaches to occur.

Once discovered, we work with patients to correct the misalignments. We do not pop or twist the spine or force it into position. Rather, we use a gentle technique that allows the body’s natural healing ability to begin to work. This brings things into balance, allowing the body to communicate with the brain in the proper manner again. Most patients report feeling much better and see a decrease in headaches after only a few adjustments.
