Migraines are generally misunderstood. Doctors do not really know what causes them. Those that do not have them cannot really understand all that goes along with a migraine. They may imagine a person with a migraine simply has a really bad headache, but so much more goes along with that. Nausea is just one symptom that accompanies a migraine. What are some things that trigger a migraine?
- A previous accident or head trauma, even if its minor
- Inherited genes
- Environmental factors
- Chemicals in the brain
- Certain foods or beverages
What Can Be Done?
Doctors in the medical field would probably turn to medication as a solution. Things such as anti-seizure drugs, beta-blockers, and anti-depressants have been used to treat migraines. While these may give temporary relief, they only address individual symptoms, not the underlying cause. They also come along with unwanted side effects.
It is recommended that a person with migraines should keep a journal. Recording such things as food eaten, temperature changes, activities, environment, and the weather is a good idea. It may help a person avoid triggers for them personally and, therefore, experience fewer headaches.
There is another area to be looked into that is having success in treating people with migraines. It is that of upper cervical chiropractic care. This type of treatment addresses the underlying cause of migraines. It can come down to a tiny misalignment of about ¼ of a millimeter in the upper neck area. The top two vertebrae of the neck are sensitive to misalignments. When this occurs, due to accidents or other trauma, undue pressure is put on the brainstem causing the nervous system not to function properly. Communication between the brain and body is disrupted leading to such problems as migraines and nausea. Other symptoms may also be present. Once this misalignment is corrected, proper flow of blood and cerebral spinal fluid return, communication problems are resolved, and migraines can become a thing of the past!
