This pain is certainly a common symptom, but it is not the only one. Many migraine sufferers experience a host of other changes:

  • Sensitivity to light, sound, or touch
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Experiencing strange odors

Migraines in Children

Migraines can happen at any age. Staggering statistics show that a high percentage of young ones suffer from this type of attacks as well. As many as 23% of young girls and 8% of boys will have experienced migraines by the time they reach 17. Happily, young people tend to have fewer attacks, and they are often shorter in duration than those in adults. However, for children, there are no medications approved for migraine management. What are some practical things that can help?

First, consult a physician or neurologist to confirm that the episode is not due to a more urgent condition. For many children (and adults too), sleeping off the migraine is the best option. In young ones, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting are found in nearly 90% of migraine cases. Doctors will usually prescribe antiemetics to quell the uneasiness. These medications, in moderation, can be helpful. However, too many could lead to rebound headaches. These, unfortunately, tend to be more intense and longer lasting.

A New Approach to Migraine Relief

Taking your child to see an upper cervical chiropractor could be the first step in correcting the root of the problem causing the migraines. A small misalignment of the top vertebrae of the spine can cause a host of neurological issues, including migraines. An examination can determine if there is a need for an adjustment. A gentle adjustment may be all that is required to restore proper flow and communication between the brain and the body.
